How to Not Get Deepfaked

This is important. We're all in this together.

Hi Friend,

A deepfake is a super realistic audio, video, or image falsely purporting to depict a real person. A skillful and malicious deepfake can cause horrific damage to someone's life. And corporations are hard at work making it easier and easier to create convincing deepfakes.

Denmark is planning to allow people to own the copyright to their faces, voices, and bodies to protect against realistic, digitally generated imitations of personal characteristics without consent. In Denmark, deepfakes will have to be taken down, victims compensated, and media outlets fined.

The United States could do the same if its government finds the will. And that's where we come in.

The Danish culture minister, Jakob Engel-Schmidt, said he hoped the bill that is expected to pass through the Danish parliament would send an “unequivocal message” that everybody has the right to the way they look and sound. He told The Guardian:

“Human beings can be run through the digital copy machine and be misused for all sorts of purposes and I’m not willing to accept that.”
