Free Pre-K for All in Every State

Hi Friends,

On November 1, New Mexico is expected to make child care available free to anyone who wants it.

The second state to do this should be your state.

This is a badly needed and extremely popular idea that has been around for ages but seen little action. It was in the campaign platforms of presidential candidates such as Dennis Kucinich, Bernie Sanders, and even the successful Joe Biden of 2020. Sadly, for Biden, "universal pre-kindergarten" came to mean something "affordable," not something free.

Now there is new attention to the idea of universal, free pre-K. New York City mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani has proposed it for New York. And polling suggests public support for such programs.

The loudest criticism of what New Mexico is doing seems to be that by making something universal it is offering to pay for something for rich people.

Why do we never hear that criticism when it comes to routine corporate welfare and regressive taxation from our governments?

Who really imagines rich people will want free childcare in place of elite toddler institutes and private nannies?

And who cares that a small percentage of a program could go to people who can well afford it, when universality has been the key to the duration and strength of programs like Social Security and Medicare that have not been subject to disingenuous right-wing accusations of unfairness, and when eliminating the need to determine who is poor enough for free child care will probably save more money than the provision of child care to a small number of wealthy kids?

After taking this action, please use the tools on the next webpage to share it with your friends.

Thanks for all you do!
