Your State Can Stop Making Prisoners Pay for Phone Calls

In the United States -- "we're number 1!" -- you have the greatest chance in any wealthy country of being locked up in prison, and a greater chance of it being for a longer time and under harsher conditions. While locked up, isolated, and unproductive, you can also be forced to pay exorbitant amounts of money to make a phone call to someone you love and miss.

It really is expensive to be poor, and you (or your friend or family member) can end up paying vastly more than anyone outside of prison, or just not making that call.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) had at long last created limits, beginning in January of this year, on the cost of phone calls in prisons. But FCC Chairman Brendan Carr -- noted censor of Jimmy Kimmel, rightwing advocate against freedom of speech, and guy who's hard to research on the internet because of the volume of reports exclusively about a disgusting South Park cartoon making fun of him -- undid the limits.

But all is not lost. Six states (CA, CO, CT, MA, MN, NY) have done better than the FCC ever tried to do. They've made prisoners' phone calls free. {{ StateFull | default: 'your state' }} can do the same.
