RA Senior Strategist India Walton and cofounder Jeff Cohen celebrate at the official victory party minutes after Zohran Mamdani was declared mayor-elect of New York City. With the help of donations from RootsAction supporters, India led a group of activists from Buffalo, NY, who knocked on hundreds of doors in the days leading up to the victory.

RootsAction was the first national organization to announce its support for the Mamdani mayoral campaign. We did that on day one, on October 23, 2024 — sending out an email blast that began:  

"At RootsAction, we rarely support candidates for mayor. But ZOHRAN MAMDANI is so special that we’ve made an exception. At age 33, Zohran is already a hugely respected and effective state legislator who announced today that he’s running for Mayor of New York." 

From that day until victory in November 2025, we recruited volunteers and raised money for the campaign. And, thanks to your support, we brought volunteers from Buffalo to canvas New York City in the final days before the election.
