The Living Wage for All Act

A new bill in Congress called the Living Wage for All Act would be transformative. The bill is sponsored by progressive members of Congress and endorsed by over 100 labor and justice organizations. Millions of lives would be dramatically improved.
The federal minimum wage was last raised in 2009, when it increased to today's rate of $7.25 per hour.
If we were to set aside long-ago debunked myths about negative consequences of a decent minimum wage and craft legislation to gradually phase in and then maintain a living wage for all, it would look like H.R. 8555.

Here is what H.R. 8555 would do if made law:
- Raise the federal minimum wage for large employers each year for six years, reaching $25, and from that point on adjust it until it reaches two-thirds of the national median hourly wage of all employees, and then maintain that level;
- Do the same for other employers over a period of 12 years;
- Do the same on slightly different schedules for the following groups who are treated differently under current law:
- tipped employees of large and other employers,
- youth employees,
- disabled employees,
- incarcerated employees
. . . thereby bringing us all up to a universal living wage.
