As your constituent, I want you to know that I am ashamed and frightened by the new McCarthyism.
The arrival to Congress of a handful of candidates who oppose wars, climate destruction, legalized bribery, and the plundering of the public's wealth for the enrichment of a dynastic set of oligarchs — candidates who in many countries would hardly even be considered leftist — does not worry me at all.
What worries me is a red scare campaign driven by crackpot strategy memos and the perversion of polling results.
What worries me is a president giving himself the power to treat political views he disagrees with as a crime, a State Department fantasizing about Cuban assaults on the United States while intentionally blockading and starving the people of Cuba, a Secretary of State equating leftist politics with terrorism, activists going to prison for decades for opposing a murderous paramilitary force on U.S. streets, and the current push to transfer massive resources into a military intent on antagonizing Russia and China as part of a confrontation with "communism" that would be entirely ridiculous if not for the risk of a world war.
Russophobia has been built up since 1917, with a brief pause during World War II, and it has never done anyone the slightest good. Media outlets have demanded greater and greater hostility toward Russia and China, while the world needs cooperation that can address non-optional crises like climate, disease, poverty, and homelessness. Instead we just get more weapons.
So I call on you to publicly denounce the new red scare, to publicly mock the absurd accusation that liberal and progressive organizations are part of a communist and terrorist conspiracy, and to find the courage to propose making peace with Russia, China, Iran, and the rest of the world.
