Tell Congress to welcome these new members

Hi Friends,

We're happy to say that the three candidates we've supported in Michigan have won their primaries: Abdul El Sayed for the Senate, and Donavan McKinney and William Lawrence for the House. So has the Congressional candidate we've supported in Tennessee, Justin Pearson. They join a growing list of exciting winning candidates we've backed from California, Colorado, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. Many are favored to win in their general elections in November. If they do, we want Democrats in Congress to welcome them, even if they are called (or call themselves) "socialist" — or are backed by democratic socialist groups.

During the 1930s, many politicians warned against “socialism” as they tried to block Social Security, unemployment insurance, the minimum wage, the 40-hour work week, and more.

During the 1960s, when Medicare for seniors became a reality, many politicians warned of “socialism.”

Now, present-day reactionaries and corporatists – including more than a few Democrats – are freaking out because more democratic socialists may be headed to Congress.

Tell your Democratic representative and/or senator(s) to welcome the socialists on their way to Congress.

One of the many conservative corporate Democrats in the House, Josh Gottheimer, was up in arms after three socialists recently won his party’s primaries in New York City. “The question is,” he said, “are we going to let them take over the party? Or are we going to stand up and fight back? Many of us believe, as I do, that if you’re a socialist, you’re not a Democrat.”

But actually, a Gallup poll last year (see “Background” below) found that 66 percent of Democrats nationwide view socialism more positively than capitalism.

While anti-progressives like Gottheimer want to “stand up and fight back,” let’s make it clear to Democrats in Congress that democratic socialists are breathing new life into a stagnant party and must be welcomed with open arms.

In addition to emailing Congress at the link above, you can phone your representative's and senators' offices at this number (all you have to know is your address and what you want them to do):
