Nothing ends a honeymoon quite like financial worries.
A new poll shows that the bump in approval that President Obama enjoyed in the wake of the Osama Bin Laden killing has dissipated and that public disapproval of the president’s handling of the economy has reached new heights.
The Washington Post-ABC poll found that 49 percent of those surveyed disapproved of the way Obama is handing his job, compared with 47 percent who approved. The split was even worse when people were asked only about the economy, with 59 percent of respondents disapproving and 40 percent approving.
The Post attributes the numbers to rising gasoline prices, falling house prices, and the recent dismal news on employment. The Labor Department said Friday that employers had added 54,000 jobs in May, far fewer than analysts had expected. The unemployment rate also inched up one-tenth of a point to 9.1 percent.
The poll numbers could be an indicator of the tough re-election campaign Obama faces, with Americans saying the country is on the wrong track by a margin of 2 to 1. Nearly six in 10 of those surveyed believe the economy has not even started to recover.
