Statement by RootsAction about the victory of Abdul El-Sayed:

AIPAC fell on its face in Michigan. Despite the fact that AIPAC once again spent a record amount of money in an attempt to buy an election, voters nominated Abdul El-Sayed and rejected AIPAC’s politics of fear and Islamophobia. Voters showed that they want what progressives have been clamoring for, including Medicare for All, a stop to endless wars, and true economic security.

RootsAction has long decried the power of big money in politics. AIPAC’s current spending spree is just the latest, most grotesque example of this corruption of American politics. Thankfully, voters are starting to overcome the deluge of outside spending. The victory of El-Sayed is yet another example of AIPAC’s eroding influence among the Democratic Party electorate.

It is long past time for the party’s leaders to wake up to the views of its constituents. While the party establishment continues to accept the influence of the Israel-right-or-wrong lobby, most voters have clearly made up their minds otherwise. With a supermajority of the party now wanting an end to the “special relationship” with Israel, the Democratic leadership can no longer justify its failure to make ending that relationship a part of the party agenda. If the Democratic Party wants to have winning appeal to voters, especially young people, working class voters, and voters of color, it must heed the voice of its constituents.
